Social Studies Chapter 8 Thursday, May 10th (open book)

Religion~ Finish Chapter 19 We Pray for Healing and Eternal Life

Math~ Continue Fractions in Chapter 10

Reading~ The last story in our book is The Koala Catchers. We will focus on Author's Purpose, Forming Generalizations, Context Clues, and Multiple Meaning Words.

Spelling~ see list (this will be our last spelling test of the year, however the kids will still be learning new vocabulary especially with our unit on Australia).

Grammar~ Sentence Combining with Adjectives and Adverbs

Science~ REPTILES!!! We will be having a special visitor, REPTILE PETE!!! Please send in $4 with your child. Pete will come to our school and bring all different types of reptiles that the children will get to see up close (and maybe even touch, if they're brave enough).

Some announcements for the week!!!
Our Math test will be on Wednesday, April 25th and will cover Division with REMAINDERS! There will be 30 problems, please study this skill with your child, they will have to show all of the steps for long division.

Our field trip to the Boonshoft Museum Of Discovery is Thursday, April 26th. Remember students need to pack at lunch for the day since we will have to eat in the classroom when we return to school. Please email me if you'd like to attend this trip with us.

Mrs. Roach is putting together a Dessert Cookbook for our auction item. Please check your email for information she sent out.

The Buy One Get One Free Bookfair is this week. Our class will preview books today (monday) and any books you wish to buy will be purchased on Wednesday.

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter and a peaceful break! We are gearing up for the end of the year and our last 7 weeks (can you believe it)?!

Here is what we strive to accomplish this week:

Religion~ Chapter 27 Easter and begin Chapter 18 Celebrating Penance and Reconciliation

Math~ We are skipping to the end of Chapter 9 (Section C). In this chapter they will take the skill of division a big further looking at patterns of basic facts and 'long' division with remainders.

Reading~ Our story this week is Two Bad Ants. We will focus on Drawing Conclusions, Author's Purpose and Point of View, and Context Clues.

Grammar~ Adjectives that Compare

Science~ REPTILES!!! This is one of my favorite science lessons! We will do a lot of whole group instruction along with an individual inclass project that will be similar to our penguin projects. Please let me know if you own a reptile that may like to make a class visit :)

The third quarter ends on Friday, March 23rd! Hard to believe, I know!
I will be out of town on Friday and Mrs. Shahady will be subbing for our class. Remember there is a 2 o'clock early dismissal on Friday!

Reading~ Our story this week comes from Time for Kids Pure Power. Some skills we will focus on include Main Ideas and Supporting Details, Reading Advertisements, Facts and Non Facts, Root Words, and Context Clues.

PRESIDENT PROJECTS!!! Students will be bringing home papers today giving instructions on their next project. These are due Tuesday, Feb. 21st!

Religion~ Finish Chapter 11 and move into Chapter 12 God Calls Us to Holiness

Math~ Continuing with Multiplication. I've made a 'tab' at the top of this page called "helpful websites". If your child is becoming bored with flashcard practice these are some interactive computer games that will help with multiplication practice. We will be ready for our Chapter 6 Math test next week (either Tuesday or Wednesday). Students will have it written in their homework notebooks later this week!

Reading~ Our story this week is Big Blue Whale. Skill we will cover are forming generalizations, using a graph, author's purpose and point of view, and figurative language.

Math~ 6, 7, and 8 as a factor. Students should be practicing their flash cards EVERY night, even if it is only for 5-10 minutes!

Reading~ Cactus Hotel is our story this week and we will focus on cause and effect, using a chart, sequence of events, and suffixes as our skills.

Social Studies~ The students have been broken into groups and are working together on a Penguin Project. Students had to research their type of penguin, type a paragraph or two using Publisher, and create a life size version of their penguin. These will be hanging in the hall by the end of this week. Please stop in for a visit during Catholic Schools Week!!!

Our babyshower was a hit and the kids had a great time!
This week we will try to get back into our "regular" schedule which will be good for both the kids and myself.

Religion~ Chapter 9 The Church Teaches Us

Math~ Chapter 5 deals with MULTIPLICATION!!! Some of the students are very excited to learn multiplication, while others are hesitant. It is VERY important that students are studying math facts every night after they're introduced. We will be making flash cards so each child has some at home. There are HUNDREDS of multiplication games online, try to make this as enjoyable as possible!

Reading~ Our story this week is A Very Cool Place To Visit. Students will be working on main ideas, learning to summarize, multiple-meaning words, and context clues.

Chapter 3 Social Studies Test on Wednesday, Nov. 16th!

It was great meeting with those of you able to make it to Parent/Teacher Conferences. It is always helpful to have a parent's perspective about their child! Please stay in contact with me via email, notes, or phone if you feel there is an issue that arrises. Clear communication between parents and teachers is very important for the success of your children!

Religion~ Chapter 7 Ordinary Time

Math~ more subtraction practice...we will be subtracting and regrouping across 0. This can be very confusing for third grade students! Please look over your child's work to make sure they are grasping this concept. Making sure the problems are written correctly and they are taking their time, this will be very helpful while trying to tackle this skill :)

Reading~ Our story this week is Moses Goes to a Concert and we will practice Main Ideas, Summarizes, and Context Clues.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week. If you forget your time, please email me immediately so I can get that to you. If you are late for your scheduled time it may result in a shortened conference or it may need to be rescheduled.

We will not have a lunch period on Thursday. Please send a small, healty snack for your child to eat around 10:30.

We have started IOWA testing! I looked back at the email I sent this morning and realized we will not finish until Tuesday, Oct. 18th. Please make sure your children are getting enough sleep and a healthy breakfast before heading to school. I would like to do most tests in the morning, however, because of our fine arts schedule this is not always possible. There are a few days when we will test after lunch.

Our field trip to Wartinger Park is this Thursday, Oct. 6th and it looks as though we will have fabulous weather!!! If you signed up to volunteer please be at school by 8:20 on Thursday morning. Remember your child needs a packed lunch with a drink and you will need one as well if you're ocming with us. The students may dress up in 'pioneer garb' which makes the field trip even more memorable :)

We will NOT have a spelling test this week due to a short week, field trip and testing...

Parents! We have our first fieldtrip planned for Thursday, October 6th. We will be heading to Wartinger Park to learn about the history of Beavercreek. This is an 'all day' field trip (8:30-1:30) and we will need many parents to voluteer! A reminder that parents volunteering to come along need to be finger printed and need to have taken the child protection class. Feel free to email me if you'd like to volunteer for this trip!

This is the website I will be using to help inform you of upcoming events (fieldtrips, tests, projects, spelling words, etc.) This site will NOT be used for daily homework. Daily homework will be your child's responsibility every morning. They will copy assignments from the board into their homework notebooks. I would like to thank each of you for choosing St. Luke School, I hope you love it as much as I do!  I have a feeling this is going to be a GREAT year!
